100 Things to Do in Glen Rose (a work in progress)
A Outsider's Inside Guide to Cheap and Free Fun in my New Hometown
1. Have a PICNIC AT BIG ROCKS PARK. Be sure to bring a trash bag and pick up after yourself. Be even nicer and pick up after someone else too.
2. Have a CUP OF COFFEE AND A FRESH DANISH AT BARNARD STREET BAKERY in the Exxon gas station at the corner of 67 and Barnard. Go in the morning so you can enjoy the hubbub of workers coming and going.
3. SHOP-HOP IN DOWN TOWN AND AROUND TOWN on the 3rd Saturday evening of any month. It's Girls Night Out, and the store owners have wine and snacks, plus extra sales and drawings. Shop-happy men are welcome. my favorites: JUNK YARD DOG, ANGELS WITH ATTITUDE, CAYLOR CREEK
4. GO OFF THE BEATEN PATH AT DINOSAUR STATE PARK and find loads of dinosaur tracks . Walk along the riverbed near the Blue Hole- they are everywhere! You can also catch life sized replicas outside the park entrance.
5. TAKE THE SELF-PACED DOWN TOWN HISTORIC DISCTRICT WALKING TOUR. You can get you packet at the visitors’ bureau or the downtown museum. Even though I'm not on it officially, do come by The Little House on Grace at 207 Grace. Say 'Hey' if I'm home.
6. VISIT THE DOWN TOWN MUSEUM. See dinosaur footprints, fossils, aa very old and tiny post office and tidbits of local history.
7. LOOK FOR OUTSTANDING BARGAINS AND SUPPORT A GREAT CAUSE AT THE FUMC THRIFT STORE, a block off the square. Open Tuesday through Saturday 11 AM to 2 PM.
8. TAKE A DRIVE IN THE COUNTRY. Meander south on highway 144 or west on 67 and you can take turns that eventually wind you back to town. Be sure to enjoy the view of the town nestled in the valley as you come up from the west.
9. Forget the car. BICYCLE THROUGH THE COUNTRY. You might want to train first. There are no flat roads here.
10. FILL UP ON CHICKEN FRIED STEAK AT LOCO COYOTE. Go hungry and be patient. Sit outside and enjoy the view while you wait. Bring your own beer.
11. TAKE A DIP IN THE BLUE HOLE at Dinosaur State Park. Rest on the natural ledge that runs across the river. Imagine the DINOSAURS that were there first!
12. PICK UP PECANS. When they fall on public grounds they are yours for the taking. Free tastes better.
13. HAVE LUNCH AT THE CITIZEN'S CENTER on Barnard. Served week days from 12AM to 1PM. $5 for citizens that aren't senior, and a real bargain at $3 for those that are. Call ahead to let them know you're coming. If you play the piano, they'd love to hear you!
14. PERUSE THE AISLES AT ACE HARDWARE STORE, next to the Exxon mentioned earlier, for a break from the SUPER DUPER sized Lowes and Home Depots. They have a good supply of stuff and are nice people.
15. INDULGE IN FRESH BAKED, HOMEMADE PIE at the Pie Peddlers on the suare. Two local school teachers have turned their pashion for baking into your next treat. Open Wednesday through Saturday
16. GO ANTIQUING in and around town. There are more than a few shops along 67 and Barnard.
17. FIND OUT WHERE THE BUZZARDS are currently nesting for the night and enjoy the spectacle as they alight onto high wires and tree branches. Come back the next morning to watch them awaken and stretch their long wings in the sun before taking off for the day. Right now they are enjoying lodgings on the cell tower as you first come into town.
18. KAYAK, CANOE, FLOAT down the clear Brazos. Weekend water emptying from Lake Granbury in the summer means you'll catch it at the right water level and the trip is half work, half ride. You will be guided by a great blue heron the whole way. Guaranteed.
19. LISTEN TO SOME BLUE GRASS at Oakdale Park. There are a couple of blue grass festivals there a year. You can walk around and hear folks sitting at the picnic tables doin' the blue grass jam or hear it oficially on stage. Both equally entertaining.
20. See what's happening at the TEXAS EXPO CENTER. There is something going on almost every weekend- horse riding, jumping, roping, rodeos, circus acts, tractor pulls. Most things are free or cheap.
21. Come see a WORK OF ART on the square. Robert Summers scuplted a larger than life bronze statue of the founders of Glen Rose. It is beautifully situated in a natural grass and rock setting.
22. Listen to LIVE MUSIC in downtown. Several venues host live music on any given night. Try HOLLYWOOD and VINE, STORYBOOK CAFE, THE GREEN PICKLE, or CAPTAIN JACK'S.
23. Ride in the PALUXY PEDAL. Anywhere from 29 miles to 80 miles One of the highest rated bike rides in Texas. Every October, when the weather is nice! www.paluxypedal.com
24. Catch some off road cycling at FOSSIL RIM. Do it by moonlight when the moon is full. www.fossilrim.com
25. Tour the nuclear POWER PLANT. Sure, sounds sort of like a school field trip. But, hey, those were FUN days weren't they?
26. Watch an outdoor movie in the summer at our UP AGAINST THE WALL movie events. Every Friday, downtown Chamber of Commerce wall, usually starts around 8:30 PM.
27. Join in a PARADE!!! We have a 4th of July parade and a Christmas parade annually, and anyone can join. Just plan ahead a week or so, fill out the application (info in the paper a week or two before each parade) and you can be front and center!
28. ADOPT a PET from the animal shelter. I know, you can do that anywhere. But this would help you remember your very fun trip to GLen Rose- every time you give your pet a hug.
29. WORSHIP WITH LOCALS at one of our 25 or so churches. We have all of the common denominations and some that don't belong to any. You can find them all in our tiny little phone book.
30. TREASURE HUNT at Peaceful Valley junk store in Walnut Springs, just 12 miles south on highway 144. It's on the left as you get into town. They have a little bit of everything and the prices can't be beat.
31. STAR GAZE, MOON GAZE through the branches of our tall pecan trees or out in a field- you can actually see the stars here! Ready the Glen Rose reporter for a bi-weekly Stargazer column to get a hints for where to look for planets and special events in the sky.
32. PERUSE OUR TWO WEEKLY PAPERS, both out on Wednesday, for a taste of true home town, Texas style reading. You;ll find the garage sales and any special happenings, plus all the important local news.
33. BIRD WATCH. You can do it easily by from the overlook at the BIRD SANCTUARY downtown (across the street from the Pie Peddlers) or our in the country, where the golden cheeked warbler takes refuge in our old growth cedar.
34. Come to a BARNARD'S MILL ART LEAGUE for a lesson from a local artist and support our local artists. Meet the second Tuesday of each month at Barnard's Art Museum.
35. TOUR BARNARD'S MILL ART MUSEUM. There are some surprising works of art here, by local and nationally reknowned artists. ROBERT SUMMERS pieces are on display here.
36. VOLUNTEER. Christmas in Action in April, Brazos River Clean up in October, FUMC Thrift Shop year round.
37- CHEER FOR THE GLEN ROSE TIGERS! _ Football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball- there is always a game going on and always atheletes who would love a supportive crowd!
38. WATCH WOODCARVERS at Oakdale City Park- chainsaw or hand rasp- they are amazing artists who meet out there several ties a year.
