Week 2: Hard Rock Blues

Six days to clear rock and dirt from 95% of the house site and another six days to get the last 5%. The rock saw worked to cut 4 inch chunks of hard rock from the garage corner in the front of the house. They finally got it down to the level of the foundation on Friday. Today (yes, working on a Sunday!) Mike and Robert measured off the edges of the house to make places for the pier driller to get started on Monday.
I also met with the newest member of the Big Hill Village, Tonya, my friend and now interior designer (photo to come). Can I tell you how hootie-tootie I feel saying that?

Rita called tonight to get my travel plans for the week. I know she will make sure Chris feeds my cats and gets my mail. They are the closest thing I have to direct family here- as in the kind that take care of practical things while you are gone.
I worked in the yard today here on the Little House on Grace. I found two blue bonnet plants growing! It seemed so genteel to be weeding and cleaning such a quaint and tiny yard. A far cry from the branch hauling and chain-sawing I did yesterday on Big Hill. Both FUN.
Building might be fun, I like seeing the progress, even slow progress.

A House Built on Rock

Solid rock! Week One has ended short of the goal of drilling for pier placement. The digging has produced big, chunky rocks and in the last corner of digging, solid rock. Mike and crew were able to pull most of the rocks out. I now have beautiful rocks scattered along the driveway and under the tree groves. Perfect for small groups to gather. Just like I saw in my head when I went to the land for the first time and looked out over the view.
Mike has to rent a rock saw to break up the last of the rock. Seems it is a solid shelf. In fact, they have dug down to a solid sheet of level rock for the whole foundation. So, this will truly be a house built on rock.
I spent Easter lunch with Linda and Karen on Lonesome Oak, their land on the Brazos. They had an eagle couple in the trees on their land this week!
The best news this week- the burn ban has lifted!! I made a great little fire in the new fire pit area. Kept it small and under control. :)
I have a cold this week, a bit run down I suppose. Have trips booked for several weeks out...better drink my OJ.
Friday night as the fire was dying down I sat and watched a full moon rise over the far ridge, just as the light was fading. It looked like a giant glowing balloon as it crested the horizon, then got brighter and brighter as it rose in the sky. God is still God.
LOAN PAPERS SIGNED!

Four and a half years ago I moved to Glen Rose. My plan was to rent or buy a small home, save for and then buy a beautiful piece of land in the country, and one day build my dream home on it. Today, I took a huge step toward that goal by signing the loan papers for home construction. The folks at First Financial Bank said excitement was written all over my face. The team at Glen Rose Title squeezed in one more loan closing today to help me out with my busy travel schedule (and avoid a crying, pathetic women on the phone). The Big Hill Community is steadily growing. I am absolutely amazed at how many people it takes to build a home. And I only know of the ones I see and meet.
When I think of all that has happened in my life over the last 4 1/2 years- and even before that, the fact that I am actually doing this is astounding. God delivers. Again. (Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief).
Two of my sisters, Linda and Rebecca came down for the big event. So did Karen, Linda's partner, and Ava, my nearly perfect niece. We went out to Big Hill after the signing and popped some peach champagne and had a celebration "parTAY" right about where the hot tub will be.
The afternoon marked the beginning of visable progress toward a long term goal. And the evening ended with quiet and stillness on Big Hill. I hope for a lot more evenings like this one.

I believe, I believe, I believe- I will close on Friday, March 14, I believe God has a plan for my life and knows my needs before I can name them. I believe everything will work out for good.
Lord, I believe, help my unbelief.

My mom's brother Lloyd died after a bout with pneumonia. He was our family joke teller.
I saw a rainbow on my way home from Big Hill yesterday. I worked clearing trees and brush until the rain stopped me. I was feeling a bit introspective that day and in steady vibe with God- I believe, help my unbelief..a conversation held in many forms, spoken from the heart.
No Closing This Week

Well, shoot. I got home from an eight-day trip arriving at 5 AM and coming back to Glen Rose solely for the construction loan signing before heading back to the airport for another trip. And it didn't happen.
OK, so the trip was Hawaii, BUT I was so sick I sought medical attention and mostly stayed in my hotel room with bronchitis. I know, it just doesn't hold up well, does it?

Mike has laid down a caliche driveway and most of the stumps are dug up from the home site, which was muddy from a cold winter rain yesterday. The driveway looks inviting winding through the trees.
I look forward to using it to drive HOME.
